[missing-sync-winmobile-talk] Syncing deletes contacts on device

MS version 2.5.1. Device is an Orange SPV M600 running Windows Mobile 5.
Synchronisation from iCal/Address Book rather than from Entourage.

Calendars and tasks synchronise without difficulty and all other functions
seem to be in good order.

However, contacts sychronise badly. When I plug the device in, I'll often
get a "Communications error. Please restart" message against the Contacts
item.

I'll then click on "Sync" and there will be the appearance of a successful
sync, but while my calendars and tasks will be in order, all the contacts
will  have been wiped from the device. Syncing again will cause the
contacts to be correctly written to the device.

I have tried slow syncing and this makes no difference. Having the Mac
overwrite the device on every sync is not an option - I often accumulate
new contacts which need to get into my Address Book.

What can I do to fix this?
