[missing-sync-winmobile-talk] itunes not showing the pda mount

I have a del x521v wm5.  My mac is ppc mac os 10.4.7.  I am mounting  
the device on the desktop, then opening itunes, but the application  
doesn't completely open and I get the error message "server  
connection interrupted" then it gives the name of the pda.  At the  
bottom of the window is the button for disconnect.  If I disconnect,  
iTunes will come up, but I don't have the pocket pc as a source.   
Then Missing Sync ends up having to be force quit and then iTunes  
will totally shut down.

What am I doing wrong?
