[missing-sync-winmobile-talk] sync with MDA Compact 2

I'm using a G4 Quicksilver DP 10.4.7 with a T-Mobile MDA Compact pro 2
and have had this problem every 3 or 4 days since I bought MS a few
weeks ago - it worked fine during the trial :(  All the software is up
to date.

When I connect (usb to the keyboard socket) I see the semi transparent
icon going through the stages and then MS window opens. The date in the
top panel is updated to the current date + time. Then nothing happens
(sometimes I get a "disconnected" error) although I have it set to sync
on connect in prefs. If I click the sync button I get the spinning pizza
wheel and eventually force quit. Today it froze my cursor (memories of
system 9!) and I had to shut down with the power button. Reconnecting
doesn't fix this and the only solution I've found is to uninstall and
reinstall which is a bit of a slow way to do a sync...

I'd appreciate any ideas as to what may be going on.
