I suggest you go over to XDA-Developers forum or webpage - I remember seeing
a number of post there on how to update ROM from expansion cards (refers to
HTC devices but most common devices are either made by them and re-branded,
HP and Dell are, or a similar - I seem to remember it involved using the
devices boot-loader program in a special mode. This is basically what the
ROM upgrade programs for PC do - they load the boot-loader program and run
the install program (cab file) via that so OS is not running. You need to
check as this is from memory as I've not been on that site for a while (PDA
setup as I like it so no more hacking)
