Sorry to be slow getting back to you on this, I wanted to be sure of the
result and then I was away for a fortnight.

You were spot on. Since "Mount on Connect" was turned off I've had no
problems at all. To be sure I tried to mount the MDA Compact 2 today and
the app hung again and wouldn't sync after I forced quit. I reinstalled,
checked  "Mount on Connect" was turned off and all is good again. Many thanks.

On another topic - is there any way I can extract my notes and my text
messages from the MDA? I need to have it repaired (won't recognise any
storage cards) & I doubt the data will survive.
