I am using my computer a lot without being connected, and MS works fine. 
However, I am pretty sure that your problem has to do with using a 
separate location, where you haven't opened the respective ports in the 
Firewall. You will need to open those to be able to use MS.

I am sure Ken will jump in and tell you what you have to do. But let me 
assure you that you do not have to be connected to the internet to use MS.
