Hi David,

The Treo 700w update is recommended but not required. The component  
of the update that is most useful is the USB Switch application as it  
allows you to change the USB connectivity from RNDIS to Serial. Even  
if you don't install the update, you should still be able to connect  
and sync via USB but the connection time and sync speed may be slow.

If you're not in a position to install the 700w update and don't want  
to use USB, you should still be able to connect your 700w to your Mac  
via Bluetooth, provided you have built-in Bluetooth on your Mac.
