I did manage to finally force a sync by deleting all read only  
calendars in iCal and performing a backup in iCal.  But I then got a  
load of write errors to the device.  Upon re-sync, all of the  
erroneous records were then deleted from the desktop.  Good thing I  
started with a backup yesterday.
