I have since found out that this is more a problem with isync, as my 
contacts stored on the ipod also had the same problem.

I eventually solved it by removing and resetting all devices, and the 
deleting the following folder:

/Library/Application Support/Syncservice/501/Engine Data/Data

So far, seems back to normal!
