OK,
I've done some more diagnosis of PPC on Panther problem on my Mac:

1. I've compared the files in the /System/Library/Extensions folder in 
my working Panther installation with the Extensions in the non-working 
installation. The list is identical.

Therefore, I would hypothesise that it is in a preference setting or 
some other issue than just the presence or otherwise of a rogue 
extension.

2. I've created a 'new account' on my Panther installation that doesn't 
work. Deleted all Network Profiles. PPC on this account also fails to 
hold a connection to the PPC. No difference.

More test results to come - and any suggestions on other configurations 
to test for welcome.
