This is how the Mac stores the resource fork on file systems that don't support
it, like DOS formatted volumes of Windows shares mounted over the network. They
usually stay hidden, but not on the Pocket PC. It happens for files you put on a
memory card using a card reader too.
There is no way that I know of to avoid it, but if there were, it would mean the
resource fork'd get screwed up, which is not a good thing as it's usually an
important part of the file.
Now why do Word files have one, that's beyond my understanding.
