There are different types of ID3 tags. You can see that info in iTunes when
you hit Cmd-I for a song ("Summary").

Good programs to manage the ID tags (and change the version of the tag) are
MP3Rage or MP3 ID3X. I have a Sony mp3 disk player that needs a particular
version of ID3 tags, otherwise I get the same symptoms as you.

A useful tool is the CMM (contextual menu plug-in) called MP3Info.
