Thanks for all the positive replies folks.

For now I've settled on OmniOutliner for several reasons:

  - it was already installed on my Mac
  - it's pretty straightforward to use
  - I prefer editing and ordering etc the outline on the Mac

I've not investigated ways of getting the information onto the Palm yet 
but the posts to the list have given me some good pointers.

I've seen several mentions of GTD on here and elsewhere during my 
research so I'm going to check that out. I'll also investigate Mark's 
suggestion of Kinkless GTD if I decide to try it out.

I've tried Life Balance in the past but just didn't get on with it.
