Folks

Thanks for the suggestions; I think in the short term I'll just add 
untimed events in the Palm DateBk and put my journal entries in the 
notes field.

This appeals as it's simple, doesn't involve buying, installing or using 
any extra software, and the notes are searchable in Spotlight.

I'll look into the other options and let you know how I get on.
