However, I've recently started experimenting with something else. I've been using Mac NoteTaker (Palm application and conduit) with TextMate (rather excellent text editor). http://homepage.mac.com/wis/Personal/programs/NoteTaker/NoteTaker.html http://www.macromates.com/ NoteTaker provides a hierarchical organisation of text notes on the Palm which are two-way-sync'd via a conduit to an identical hierarchy of folders and text files on the Mac. So it's extremely flexible. And it's free :-) You can browse the notes on the Mac using Finder and edit them using any text editor such as TextEdit. However, I've found TextMate to be rather excellent for the task. Drop the NoteTaker folder onto TextMate's icon and it will produce a single window which has a side draw which shows the folder structure (see the screen shot on MacroMate's home page). TextMate calls this a project and you can save the project to open later, so I have a "NoteTaker" project on my desktop. TextMate contains some great text editing features which are handy for note taking / journalling, including spell-checking, templates and indent/outdent, bookmarks and clipboard history. It's also massively scriptable. I'm still experimenting, but I can foresee me moving all of my MemoPad notes and all of my DayNotez journals into this combination. For journalling, I created a folder called "Journal" and within that I create a folder for the year containing folders for each month. These monthly folders then contain my journal entries. The nice thing is that NoteTaker names each new note with the date and time by default (you can change it), so it's a perfect fit for a journal. The main downside is that you don't get a single time-linear view of your journal. Though I'm pretty sure it would be possible to script something very suitable in TextMate (if I do get around to producing a script then I'll post here). On the upside, TextMate has an excellent project-wide search (and though it's not free, it's not expensive either). I hope this is helpful. You need to set them up as daily repeating events in iCal, not one event spanning days. It's a Palm limitation unfortunately. But of course the new G5 has 10.4.3 and required new version of Missing Sync, and in retrospect, I should have done so. Everything ended up ok, Address Book and Calendars are fine between PDA, iMac, and .Mac server, except that my Memo Pad notes on my Palm T3 are duplicated ( yet Notes still ok as single entries in my M/S Memo Pad app). I tried re-syncing and letting Memo Pad overwrite handheld, but it did not fix it. T3 still has all notes duped. All my data is backed up left and right, so I'm ok (ext backup drive, .Mac account, and still correctly synced via .Mac/iSync to this laptop from which I write). But the Memo Pad app only exists on my iMacG5 (and duplicate entries now on T3 of course), and I'm thinking the safest thing to do is reset my sync database and pick the G5 as the overwriting device - for overall fix. Correct ? As a safety I was going to make a copy of the Memo Pad database just in case - and store it on my desktop. Any other advice on how I can get my data straight again between: iMac G5, Palm T3, .Mac, and PowerBook G4 (sort of in that order of priority). Pointing me to any specific online info on this is great too - as I've found some useful docs, but want to make sure I get the details on this so I don't further mess this up. :-) [ps - I must admit Tiger's integration of syncing, but with iSync 2.1.1 still handling some devices, has proven a bit odd and confusing for someone who thought they had it licked with iSync app in Panther !] mdp From glenn at docproc.com Sun Jan 1 14:13:41 2006 From: glenn at docproc.com (Glenn Proctor) Date: Sun Jan 1 14:13:51 2006 Subject: [missing-sync-palmos-talk] Re: DayNotez or alternate journaling application with Desktop component? I am running MacOS 10.4.3. This problem reappears on each synchronisation and does not update either the Mac AddressBook or Treo Contacts. The problem is that the error message reporting the records does not give me enough information (in the case of contacts, a first and last name) to remove the offending records or track them down. I've tried searching on the record identifiers but these seem to change on each run so there is no entry in a file to search for. Any suggestions on fixing the problem? Obviously improving error messages in future versions beyond 5.0.2 (98) to aid in diagnostics. Of course I didn't catch the problem before adding extra records and pictures on the Treo that I'd like to keep (and the Treo seems to have no means of exporting contact pictures to it's photos application for back up), so simply trying to overwrite the Treo isn't yet an option (if that even works). I think it would a "bad thing" if Missing Sync re-wrote events. Remember, M/S doesn't deal with iCal directly, it deals with Sync Services. In theory there can be any number of applications that sync with data from Sync Services, and if they all rewrote the data as they saw fit, we'd have a real mess. :-/ From brian_hall at markspace.com Mon Jan 2 13:05:02 2006 From: brian_hall at markspace.com (Brian Hall) Date: Mon Jan 2 13:05:16 2006 Subject: [missing-sync-palmos-talk] Re: Time zone problems after Daylight Savings Time In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: At 3:48 PM -0500 1/2/06, David Turley wrote: >On Jan 2, 2006, at 3:30 PM, E-Commerce wrote: > >> I don't suppose this is something that could be "faked" in some >> way, is it? We tried that and it didn't work well. It caused all the iCal events to change from banner events to repeating single day events. Which would then propagate everywhere else (bad!), not to mention look bad in iCal. >I think it would a "bad thing" if Missing Sync re-wrote events. >Remember, M/S doesn't deal with iCal directly, it deals with Sync >Services. I suspect that Sync Services is shuffling data around in some way, causing AB to get a little confused and thereby causing iChat to lose its connections. I've had the problem occur when I've deleted all my AB data and then reloaded it. b On Dec 30, 2005, at 4:50 PM, Bruce Gerson wrote: > This may or may not have anything to do with Missing Sync 5.0.2 > (with OS X 10.4.3) but I figured it won't hurt to ask. > > The last couple of days, I've noticed that after completing a sync > of Contacts, the "real names" disappear from my iChat Buddy List. > I can re-associate the names with the proper Address Book card but > it will all revert on the next sync. > > There is a group in Address Book called iChat which I do not sync. > I don't remember if this is a remnant from an early version of > iChat but I don't remember creating it nor do I ever manually > update it. It is likely that the cancelled Treo sync initiated the problem and it just persists because the sync engine is out of sorts. Overwriting the handheld would definitely help clear it up, but since you can't at this time I would suggest unregistering the sync client: - Hold down the option key while you open up the Mark/Space Contacts conduit settings. - Click on Advanced Options. - Click on Unregister Sync Client and accept the warning. - Sync. This will remove our information from Sync Services and cause it to treat us like we've never been there. You should have a clean merge after that sync. Our current 5.0.3 beta addresses some issues with timeouts that might cause Sync Services to get into this state. b On Jan 2, 2006, at 12:51 PM, Leigh Smith wrote: > I'm now encountering the message when synchronising Mark/Space > contacts with no other conduits enabled on Missing Sync for Palm OS > 5.0.2 (98): > > ISyncInvalidRecordException you referenced the following records > (in a relationship) but did not actually push them: > ("com.apple.syncservices:0C60E3F4-7B1A-11DA-8E8C-0003931D1452") > > SyncClient error. Let me try an update to see if anyone can help. Myself a satisfied M/S user I migrated from old G4 (10.3.9) to a G5 via Setup Asst - 10.4.3 required new version of Missing Sync to which I upgraded, but my sync was not a "reset" and therefore created problems. Trying to reset sync on G5, Palm T3, .Mac (and by extension my Powerbook G4 which syncs to .Mac). Palm T3 is ready to be overwritten as it now has duplicate Palm Notes. iMacG5 is the only machine that has good MemoPad/Palm Notes. .Mac now has best version of Address Book & iCal & Bookmarks. Plan is to now have .Mac reset/override G5, then do a full reset sync that replaces everything on my T3 (and gives it good MemoPad/Palm Notes again). Problems: 1) Palm T3 does not USB reset/sync anymore. Missing Sync Log says that iCal conduit is conflicting (see log below). I cannot find a way to disable this conduit (the conduit that I see is called "Apple", and it appears to be a M/S conduit). Perhaps I'm in the wrong folder. In any case, knowing how to solve this issue is step 1 for me. It might have been caused by the "use Palm Hotsync" selection in the iSync prefs, but I'm unsure. 2) After all this, I have to let .Mac override the PowerBook G4 again, correct ? That should prove simpler (I'm more familiar with Panther/iSync 1.5 environment). Any add'l help greatly appreciated. mdp Log from last T3 sync attempt: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ --- Sync starting at 1/2/06 10:22 PM (22:22:51) on USB (5.0.2) Missing Sync detected a conflict for ToDo Database (ToDoDB). The Apple conduit is Apple's iSync conduit; if you want to use the Mark/Space Events, Tasks and Contacts conduits, you either need to disable the iSync/ Apple conduit in the main conduits window or remove the Apple conduit from the conduits folder. > Perhaps I'm in the wrong folder. Yes, when you turn this on, iSync copies the iSync conduit to the conduits folder. You can either use the iSync conduit or the Mark/ Space Events, Tasks, and Calendar conduits...not both. > 2) After all this, I have to let .Mac override the PowerBook G4 > again, correct ? Assuming I want to try the improved M/S conduits (instead of iSync), then when/if the iSync Options panel appears again asking whether to "Enable iSync for this Palm Device", I can leave this UNchecked/OFF. Correct ? That is, unless its required to run iSync to synchronize to my Palm T3. The User's Guide is unclear, as this panel in question is pictured with this setting checked/ON, and its not clear whether that's ONLY for when you're intentionally choosing to use iSync vs M/S conduits, or ALWAYS. [Feedback: I've been trying to carefully and objectively follow the User's Guide now to get my problem solved, and its been tough to know what to do in each instance. And the panel that asks "Delete All Contacts from Mark/Space Conduits before syncing" could also be improved. I would've saved myself a lot of hassle had I not missed this tidbit in the Guide. I wish the panel continued in fine print "Failing to do so may cause unwanted duplication of data". It should include wording that indicates the "Desktop will overwrite the PDA" on 1st sync. When you sync with the M/S conduits, it puts the data in the same place that iSync does (Sync Services), so it will appear in Address Book and iCal. First select the files and/or folders that you'd like the scripts to apply to in TextMate's project drawer. The scripts require Tiger. You may be able to modify the scripts for other editors. Each script produces HTML containing the creation date, file name and content of each of the selected files within the selected folders. TextMate renders this in a window but I guess you could just write it to a file and then open it in a web browser. The HTML includes links to TextMate for each file, but I guess you could replace these with file:// links. You can download an evaluation of TextMate from www.macromates.com to see how it all works. When she did a sync the event still showed in the Palm. So we did it again. Still right there at 4pm today in the Palm, but it wasn't in iCal. So I did a desktop overwrites device sync. The original event was a weekly repeat with a end date in the future. When she deleted the even in iCal, she deleted all the future occurrences from today on. Apparently Missing Sync / Palm was reading the ending date of the repeat and inserting an entry. In iCal the event wasn't displayed. Interesting; I should have mentioned that I've been using Bonsai on the Palm and PC for a while, but didn't really consider it as there isn't a Mac desktop version. My usage pattern is to enter and edit things on the desktop and I generally only use the Palm to refer to the outlines if I'm away from my computer. It worked fine. BUT a few minutes later my TX went into an infinite loop of reboots and I couldn't stop it using either pin-resets or warm-resets. I wonder if the big backup job corrupted the RAM such as memory leaks or runaway handles or a plain NVFS disaster. Finally, a hard reset fixed the TX. Then I did a restore job using Missing Sync which went fine except that my categories were all moved into "Unfiled" [or inbox]. I only checked VersaMail and the Launcher, Probably it happened with all apps. So I saved the day by using FileMan to restore my Palm. Any comments? Best regards, Paul N. Message-ID: After 10 trouble-free months with the Treo650, recently I started getting a nasty DataMgr DMWriteCheck failed reset error, and always at Line 8872. The problem appeared to be a corruption in the DateBook database on the Treo650. Any application that had to read through the whole database crashed with this error and caused a reset. It happened in HotSync, DBScan, and DateBk5 (in the Purge function). I don't know what corrupted the database but I suspect MissingSync 5.0.2. Changing from MissingSync 4 and from Entourage to iCal on the Mac was the only change that I have done in months. After playing around with several options (and after doing a BackupMan to the SD Card), I found that the only solution was to delete the Calendar, DateBook, Task and ToDo databases from the Treo650, open the Calendar and Task apps to recreate empty databases and then use MissingSync to override the Treo with the data in iCal. I am now back in operation and MissingSync 5.0.3b6 appears to be working. This has persisted across a "Desktop overwrites Handheld" sync. I'm still using Missing Sync 5.0.2 and a Treo 650. In the "Mail" app, when I receive an event by email from someone using outlook, I used to be able to click on the .ics file and it would automatically appear in my iCal calendar. For the past several weeks this no longer works. I'm not certain if this is related to Missing Sync upgrade, or not... but it may have happened around the time I upgraded to MS v5. If I save the .ics file to the desktop, then do an "import" in iCal and select that file, it works fine. In Mail and iCal prefs I have the appropriate options selected to automatically import .ics files into iCal... but it doesn't work. Is this a sync services problem? Anyone have suggestions?? I'm also not 100% into its methodology, but it is definitely one of the most valuable books out there. :D Speaking of organizing, I really like Smead's straight-line filing system -- think they call it Tell-i-vision or something. Yeah... that's what it was called, but I can't find the 25-division guide sets on their web site anymore (the folders are still there, though). Guess I'll use the blank-tab 1/5-cut guides and stick labels on 'em. I've often thought that DA should get with Smead and relaunch the straight-line filing (non-hanging) as some sort of GTD co-branding/marketing deal.... Both of these can do basic task management too (Shadow Plan can sync with your Palm Tasks, Brainforest can draw nice timelines). I'd also check out Life Balance. I used it for many years because it has a really nice desktop version and the Palm version integrates really nicely with Calendar and Tasks. However, I never quite got to grips with the Life Balance philosophy, it just doesn't work for me. I wanted something more GTD-like and I found shoe-horning Life Balance into GTD possible but uncomfortable. However, I recently discovered the Kinkless GTD system (kGTD) and I'm really, really happy with it: http://www.kinkless.com/kgtd It doesn't allow me to play with project outlines on the Palm, but it does provide exactly what I want on the Palm, no more and no less. All of my Project Actions are two-way sync'd as Tasks to specific iCal Calendars (either by Project or more usefully by Context). This is the main reason I upgraded Missing Sync recently - i.e. to sync iCal Calendars with Palm Categories. It all works really, really nicely. If I think of things to do on the road then I can still add them as a Palm Task and they'll come into kGTD next time I sync. This is perfect for me, as I've always found even the best Palm Outliners to be not so practical on such a small screen. I spend a lot of time at my Mac while I'm working so I also really appreciate the QuickSilver support in kGTD.
