No - only when we're (the conduit) are forced to slow sync records:
- the first sync
- desktop overwrites
- when you change the calendars and date range you're synchronizing.

It might be worth it to move those to a new calendar which you can
then export, and import it if you really need it. iCal's performance
suffers with many events, as well.
