[missing-sync-palmos-talk] Problem when upgrading my MacOS to a clean 10.3.7 drive

I just upgraded my Mac from 10.2.8 to 10.3.7, and am having some
problems.  We did the upgrade by installing a totally new hard drive,
and leaving my old drive in the machine.  Now when I try to sync, it
sees the device, and missing sync says it's running, but no data is
transfered.  isync stays on the settings for first time sync.

Has anyone else seen this problem?

Is it necessary to install palm desktop if you're just using ical and
isync?
