I think it's basically that the current memo is, frankly, pants and we would all like more.

I've been using MacNoteTaker for years which allows much bigger files than memo pad but the sync is not sophisticated enough.

What I have just been trying is to use the new 'sync' folder in MS with BBEdit text documents. 

Strengths:

    raw text suits me
    (still under testing) it will delete files when they are removed from one device (unlike MNT)
    bigger than MNT (which splits large files up, though still usable)
    you can edit the files with something like SiEd as text files
    
Disadvantages
    no Unicode (so BBEDit has to use older encodings by default
    SiEd has no file management system like MNT
    
    
    
I don't see why people can't use the Folder sync to use RTF and then one of the millions of RTF editors for Palm - is there something I missed? Or does the Folder sync not remove files deleted from the handheld? I thought Wordsmith already did something like what is being described, no?
