I wasn't put out (note my smiley about the subject being enough- I had just hoped not to type that all out:-) But i appreciate that we have to check I've covered the bases. I haven't actually used the USB connection that much - it's always been a bit flakey but now it seems dead. The Lifedrive is under warranty so it's not the end of the wordl if it turns out to have failed. I'll run through all the obvious stuff again from scratch tomorrow. I have another sync cable at work so will try that next week on the work iMac.

I've had so many peculiar problems with this new machine that I wouldn't be surprised if it suddenly starts working again. So far I've had this with the firewire and the IR, both were weird to start with then worked.

I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out that the circuitry needs to 'warm up' or something, like speakers do...
