clearly the subject line was not enough...:-)

The Ports:

- i have tested all three USB ports with other devices (EyeTV miglia, keyboard, mouse, camera, microphone, USB disks)
- I have meticulously followed all the advice in the troubleshooting section of the manual
- I have ruled out hardware problems with the USB ports: the ports all work with all the devices I mentioned.

The Cables:

    - I have a cradle and a separate cable
    - these work with my PB in MS
    - they don't work on the iMac, that is, they do not show up in Apple System Profiler as live USB ports when I am hotsyncing (or rather, trying to)

Bluetooth

as I postscripted, I have now succeeded in getting BT to work by erasing, reinstalling. But it' not enough to move 2 gigs of data around almost every day. It lost the connection after half an hour earlier on, and has been syncing for well over an hour now, and is still not very far into my iTunes playlist.

Wi-fi
I can't get this to work. i followed the instructions in the Setup assistant. i put the IP address of the iMac in but when I try to sync over the network, it fires up bluetooth. When I tell it to use the wi-fi connection, it doesn't sync.

The setup assistant says something about 'usual connection' but i have no usual connection. If there are fuller instructions (such as how to tell Windows RAS to use wi-fi), I'd be grateful for that...
