[missing-sync-palmos-talk] can't sync despite troubleshooting advice in manual

deleting the pairing, uninstalling and reinstalling worked (this was the third time I've done it!), so I now have a BT connection. But I would really like the USB one to work, since we're literally talking about gigs of data...! any practical suggestions on troubleshooting the USB connection (yes the preference is ticked) would be very welcome. thanks.
