[missing-sync-palmos-talk] can't sync despite troubleshooting advice in manual

I just got a new iMac which (frankly) has been a real nightmare because of problems like the following. I have now got MS 5.02 and my Lifedrive doesn't connect. 

I checked the USB ports in System Profiler and the Lifedrive *doesn't* show up. The cable is connected directly to the Mac, used a different cable, different USB port, nothing, whether the Lifedrive is trying connect or not. Where do I go from here? This is runninga freshly updated Tiger with permissions repaired, restarted, Diskwarrior etc etc...

(we'll troubleshoot Bluetooth and wi-fi later, neither of those work either...!)

I *haven't* installed Palm Desktop - I thought it was unnecessary. I don't want to in case it messes things up (well, as if they could be more messed up, but you know what I mean...)
