Brad has discussed this to some extent before I had a chance to post
this. The crons are Unix maintenance routines from all the way back
in the mainframe days. Some of them run daily, some weekly and some
monthly. Indeed OSX runs the crons automatically if your computer is
on. But many people are on laptops that they close or often desktop
users turn their computers off at night (or they go to sleep), which
is when the crons run (I don't remember what time of night). So
utilities are available to run these crons (via a GUI, such as
MainMenu menu command "Run Maintenance Scripts" -> 'daily' or
'weekly' or 'monthly' or 'all) when you tell them to run. There is
also thefsck -f command to repair directories (you have to hold down
command S during startup) that can repair many types of file system
problems. I believe Apple has instructions for this in their support
forums. And if all else fails (and occasionally for routine
rebuilding of the "wrapper") DiskWarrior can't be beat. Unfortunately
there are no maintenance-free or bullet-proof operating/file systems
yet. Unix comes closest but still requires a little knowledge and work.
