OK. Have you done/do you know how to do all the maintenance routines  
on your Mac? Such as rebuilding permissions, running the cron  
routines, rebooting into the unix screen so you can do fsck -f and  
that sort of thing? Because it sounds to me like you should try these  
OSX maintenance/repair routines and see if that straightens some  
things out, whether or not you have to reinstall MS. There is  
information online about (and some utilities for) doing these things  
and I can try to help (a little, really busy) if you need some  
assistance
