[missing-sync-palmos-talk] problems since 10.3.9

Ever since I installed 10.3.9 (although this may be a coincidence), 
Internet Sharing isn't working.

The Treo 600 (USB) hangs as "Signing On"

I sometimes see an error: "PPP timeout error 0x1231"

As far as I know nothing else has changed.

Connecting to a Powerbook G4/1.5Ghz.

Any clues?  I've rebooted the Treo (no difference).

The MissingSync menu bar icon doesn't change... it's almost as if the 
app never sees that the handheld is trying to communicate to it.

I don't know what else to try.
