Are you using the MAL Conduit or syncing it through Internet Sharing? 
In my testing on Friday with beta 6, I had no problems with the MAL 
conduit connecting to sync.avantgo.com. In either case, I'd make sure 
that you can connect to http://sync.avantgo.com/ from a web browser 
(you'll get an error message, but it will at least indicate if you can 
connect).
