This is the error message that I see: The synchronization failed because of a communications problem or you have exceeded the record limits. Some records may not have been synchronized. I changed all of the company names to include last names. I have tweaked some changes on the mac and the sidekick and am currently past the 8 syncs in 24 hour period. I also made sure not to have read only calenders. One thing that happens (even though the error message occurs) is the address book links, but the calender and to do list doesn't. The other day I put in birthday info for someone on my sidekick, but not on the ICAL or Adress Book. I just deleted this info now, so I am hoping that is the problem. If so that is pretty unfortunate becayse birthday info is pretty important. Also I purchased the dateslate program for the sidekick, which is a program that can be purchased on the download fun section on the sidekick. Altogether, I am not sure what the problem is. Anything else that you reccomend for my next attempt. If none of this works I will go to the debug options and set desktop will overwrite handheld on next sync. Hopefully, you can help me with this, Thaks for your help, Matthew From itpbrian at earthlink.net Sun Apr 2 11:58:24 2006 From: itpbrian at earthlink.net (Brian Burns) Date: Sun Apr 2 10:58:21 2006 Subject: [missing-sync-hiptop-talk] Fwd: T-Mobile Sidekick help Message-ID: Dear Brighton I'm having the exact same problem. I've tried emailing Mark Space to get some help but I've had little success. I used to be able to sync just fine. Now I can only sync calendars, no contacts. From my communication with Mark Space, they seem to suggest is something on my end but clearly it is not. I've tried uninstalling the program and downloading it from scratch. I've tried unregistering sync clients, debugging, everything but I've had no success. Hopefully Mark Space will take this seriously now and give us some direction on how to fix this problem. If you have any luck please share. This posting by Rod fixed all my syncing problems. As a new user I have spent a substantial amount of time trying to get a good first sync. Without a good sync subsequent syncs seem problematic. Here is what I have gathered from the mailing list, website, and experimenting. Problem: Initial syncs with errors can cause data loss during subsequent syncs. Workarounds: a. If possible, backup your iCal and Address Book data using the "Back up" file menu option built into iCal and Address Book (10.4 or later) before starting to use Missing Sync for hiptop. This allows easy recovery in the event of syncing issues. b. If your first sync(s) have errors and you don't have addresses or events on your Hiptop you want to keep, do the following: In the Missing Sync for Hiptop application hold down the option key and select the "Missing Sync for Hiptop Menu->Debug Options...". Click on "Unregister Sync Clients" and also check "Desktop overwrites handheld on next sync". Also check the "Enable Debug Logging" since the /Users/ yourname/Library/Logs/MissingSync for hiptop.log is almost the only way to diagnose the error (and it still isn't easy). c. If you have attempted a sync with the log enabled and it has an error, search for the work "Failed" in the log. Usually soon after the word "Failed" is the record causing the failure. The following couple of items outline two failures I was able to diagnose and correct. Problem: Address Book record sync failure caused by a contact without a firstname or a lastname will cause a sync error. This includes "company" contacts. Workaround: Copy the company name into the last name field. Problem: iCal record sync failure caused by less common timezones in calendar events. The uncommon time zone often occur in iCal (ics) files exported from Outlook and later subscribed/imported into iCal. Workaround: Replace with some more common timezones in .ics file. Examples (original which caused failure -> replacement): America/Dawson ->US/Pacific Africa/Abidjan -> GMT Thanks, --Rod Morehead jim On Apr 2, 2006, at 12:58 PM, Brian Burns wrote: > Dear Brighton > > I'm having the exact same problem. I too have not ben able to sync consistently. I'm so very tired of the "email tech support thing too." I've posted tech questions to the user group and for some reason they didn't get posted till a week or so later. very frustrating. The guys at missing sync are all nice people, I've met some of them at Macworld, etc... but to get help it feels like it takes as long as if we were using the pony express. Unacceptable in todays tech world. Phone support is a must. I know you guys are a small company, but the email thing has never worked for me. Not once. And I have had a lot of problems with the missing sync for both Palm and Hiptop, both of which I own. Again, nothing personal, but I've almost given up on this product. It is just too hard to deal with. It takes too much time. Truly. Not once. And I have had a lot of problems with > the missing sync for both Palm and Hiptop, both of which I own. My girlfriend spent quite a while exchanging emails with Mark/Space tech support, and I was disappointed in the emails she showed me. The person writing them seemed bright enough, but clearly wasn't cut out for tech support. For starters, he tended to write in prose form rather than bullet points. Prose may be more pleasant to read, but the goal with technical writing is not to make it pretty-- the goal is to convey precise details. To make matters worse, the guy had a hard time writing instructions in a linear way: "Do A, then B, but first do C." WTF? Does that mean C-A-B, or does it mean A-C-B? It was almost as though he wrote each step in the order it occurred to him rather than the order in which it should be executed. Isn't there a supervisor who occasionally reviews outgoing support email? Oi vey. Even if M/S can't find somebody better to do their email support, they could at least have pre-written answers for the most common procedures. Dollars to doughnuts, support questions received by M/S fall into the same patterns as every other support organization: the vast majority of the inquiries are the same. As long as M/S is saving money by limiting support to email, why not save even more by using canned answers whenever possible? Me, I've ditched my Hiptop and gone Treo 650. Missing Sync for Palm works a whole lot better, and does more to boot. --mkb From carolina.smith at gmail.com Tue Apr 4 10:42:54 2006 From: carolina.smith at gmail.com (Carrie Smith) Date: Tue Apr 4 10:42:58 2006 Subject: [missing-sync-hiptop-talk] Re: giving up... Do it at night, where the high peak time is over for the Lame-o t-mobile service. You can read below that they had for the PC version for those who are having problems. ----- You could see the "unable to read application data" if you have over 1000 contacts and are trying to sync during peak daytime hours. Similarly, if you receive a "server is unavailable" error during peak daytime hours, chances are the network is busy. Try to sync during the evening off-peak hours. Also, as you sync, pay attention to the details in the "Synchronization Progress" windows to see if any particular application is creating a problem. It could be that one of the items you are trying to import/export is exceptionally large (for example a contact in Outlook may have a large note or custom fields). You may have to edit the Outlook contact(s) slightly to reduce the size.
