I work with deaf people and have colleagues that work with deaf people. Yes,
the SideKick is great for this, and AIM is a big reason why.

Regarding the original question: I just logged onto AIM using the client
that ships with the 7100 (which sucks, and it froze on me again the first
time I tried to log on). I did get logged on, and I *can* use AIM. I do
*not* have BES, I'm in a Mac-only environment. I'm using only the T-Mobile
service (the $60 plan that includes 1000 minutes and unlimited data). I have
my email forwarded to my BlackBerry.

So for me, anyway (Albuquerquem, NM) AIM is working without BES.
