We've gotten a launcher and a couple rockets and now are trying to figure out where we can launch them. We are located in the Palo Alto area. A call to local police and fire departments has yielded a "No, you can't launch them in our town" statement from 100% of the towns called (I gave up after three-- Menlo Park, Palo Alto, and Redwood City). Looking at the list and the website it seems like there are few or no options to do this anywhere local. As far as I can tell the regular group launches at DeAnza are on indefinite hold. There was one thread in the list archive from earlier this year that indicated that there might be a site in or around the Berkeley Marina that allowed private launches on 2 days per month, but there weren't any more details. The same poster suggested there were other sites with similar restrictions that might be around, but didn't list them or suggest how to find them.. So, does anybody on the list have any suggestions? Is there some place that a list has been compiled of sites for launches, even if they are restricted? If there are no sites, what are people doing for launches? Waiting for the occasional special event launch? Or, do people launch them on the sly (which I understand is illegal, casts a bad name on model rocketeers, and can result in fines)? Any information and help would be appreciated! -Brad From jhagerty at juno.com Sun Dec 5 12:25:15 2004 From: jhagerty at juno.com (Jack Hagerty) Date: Sun Dec 5 12:38:57 2004 Subject: [BA-Rockets] Launch sites in the Bay Area Message-ID: <20041205.124107.1564.0.jhagerty@juno.com> On Sun, 5 Dec 2004 11:27:17 -0800 Brad Johanson writes: > So, does anybody on the list have any suggestions? My name is Steve Kendall, and I'm the VP of the LUNAR rocket club. We'd be glad to have you join us for our monthly launches. Our next scheduled model rocket launch is Dec 18th at Robertson Park in Livermore. You can find directions to the park on our web site, www.lunar.org. We also hold monthly high power (HP) rocket launches during the wet season at a place called Snow Ranch which is about 30 miles east of Stockton. Again, info on the website. Come on out to Livermore and meet a great group of people that love to fly rockets. We are limited (due to urban encroachment) to "F" class motors and below, with flights generally limited to below 1500'. (We make allowances for small rockets and multi-stage small rockets.) Operations start around 9am and run until 1pm weather permitting. Excellent point. For anyone that wants to come fly with us, we (LUNAR) will provide launch facilities, expertise, and a safe environment. You will need to provide your rockets, motors, wadding igniters and other typical consumable supplies. We do have small amounts of repair materials (glue, tape, Dog Barf wadding, etc.) and we may even have a few spare igniters, but we don't provide motors, nor do we have any on-site vendors to provide these items. Having said that, we DO have lots of folks that come very prepared to fly, and they are generally all quite friendly and are typically more than willing to help out a rocketeer in need. So, if you really need a C6-5 and only have C6-3s, you can probably find someone willing to swap with you. If you need a special launch set up, like for an R/C boost glider or something, we can accommodate you, but arrangements should be made in advance, if possible, and all launching activities MUST remain under the control of our LCO. We cannot and will not allow someone else to independently launch on their own equipment. It's really just a safety thing, not a power trip. We have an awful lot of kids coming out to our launches, and safety is our primary concern. It's how we guarantee that everyone will always have a safe and enjoyable time. -Steve Kendall LUNAR #600 (VP) > -----Original Message----- > From: ba-rockets-bounces@lists.markspace.com > [mailto:ba-rockets-bounces@lists.markspace.com] On Behalf Of > Gregory Wong > Sent: Thursday, December 09, 2004 2:38 PM > To: Bay Area Model Rockets Discussion List > Subject: RE: [BA-Rockets] Launch sites in the Bay Area > > Hi. My son and I launched As, Bs, and occasional Cs there many times several years ago before we started going out to LUNAR, including once with park staff looking on. I wouldn't launch anything bigger than that. Lots of water nearby to lose your rocket in if the wind picks up. I saw the sign still there sometime earlier this year. Launch window closes at 11 AM if I remember correctly and is only a couple of weekends a month (I don't remember which ones right now) If you do launch, there, be nice and have someone go over the crest of the hill first to see if someone is relaxing in the sun oblivious to al the noise you are about to make just out of site on the other side and give them a warning (experience). It is a bit far to travel, though, so I'm afraid the lack of launch sites is going to put a bit of a damper on our nascent hobby. :( I hope somebody works out a launch site for the South Bay soon. -Brad On Thu, 9 Dec 2004 19:20:58 -0800, Tom Lent wrote: > It is at the picnic table pad just on the east side of the crest of the > westernmost hill in the area where all the kite flying happens (when the > wind is too strong for rocket launching). > > My son and I launched As, Bs, and occasional Cs there many times several > years ago before we started going out to LUNAR, including once with park > staff looking on.
