From kriks at pacbell.net Sat Nov 15 22:48:25 2003 From: kriks at pacbell.net (Martin Krikorian) Date: Fri Feb 13 19:28:19 2004 Subject: [BA-Rockets] ** November Launch is Canceled ** and some better news as well Message-ID: As billed, both good news and bad. The bad news is that construction has caught up with us again at DeAnza ? the college officials are concerned about us launching in the newly configured lots. We need to meet with the head of district security to make our case, and it cannot be accomplished until after the November launch date. This means that the November launch is canceled, and we have to negotiate permission for future launches. We would like to keep the option open to launch at DeAnza in the future, even if we have to hold off launching for some time while construction is going on. Norm has set up the meeting, and Lou Dick has agreed to attend, to help us out with explaining our history of safe operations on campus. Now for the somewhat good news. We have worked long and hard at beating the bushes for a launch site, and one of the best prospects is NASA Ames. I say best because a) it?s big and has no trees, b) it has security, c) there are people there that have an interest in rocketry, in public service, and in science education for kids. The drawback is that it is a very large organization, and we have to get noticed by the right people in order to get the list of people who must approve our presence reduced to something that can be accomplished in months rather than years. The good news is that we have an opportunity to show off what we are about for the people at NASA. There is an educational event being carried out at NASA Ames on December 8, 9 and 10 (9am to 2pm). Between 4000 and 5000 fifth through eighth grade students will visit the facility, and about an hour of their time will be spent in a large tent or hanger containing displays by a variety of organizations. We were invited to come on this by the folks from the Wings of History Museum in Morgan Hill, who have participated in the past. Now this is a weekday event, and it doesn?t guarantee us anything, but it is an opportunity for us to be seen at NASA and make connections with some of the people who we need on our side when it comes to getting regular access to the Ames facility. I have invited LUNAR to participate in this as well. Charles Winter, who is the coordinator of high power for LUNAR has been our primary contact for NASA, and has been working to get launches authorized for the Team America rocket competition. What can we do while we are there?: Have rockets to show off, signs and banners, things to give away, demonstrations of rockets simulation via RocSim on a computer. We can do pretty much what we want, short of actually holding a launch. We need volunteers from the membership who can spend a morning or two at NASA. Members of the Wings of History group can help us, and LUNAR may be able to as well. What can you do right now?: Write to the board via board@baynar.org and volunteer your time, models, and ideas. We came into this late, so we need to act fast to get organized. If we jump into this with both feet, we might just make a big enough impression to get things moving for us at NASA in a big way. For those who have not heard of this, it is an educational event for middle school kids that will be held at NASA Ames. Between 4 and 5 thousand students will attend, getting a tour of the facility, seeing presentations on the history of flight, and wandering through an exhibit area. BayNar and Lunar have been invited to share the booth space of the Wings of History Museum, who will be there with exhibits on the history of aviation. Some links with more info: http://quest.arc.nasa.gov/projects/aero/centennial/expo4/index.html http://www.wingsofhistory.org/index.htm What we intend to do is this: Have a portion of the Wings of History area set up with a large table, where we can show off models, and have some additional displays. We would like to have a video monitor running, showing tapes of launches, such a LDRS. We will try to have a demonstration of Roc-Sim, using laptop computers and a large monitor. We will have handouts that give info about BayNar, Lunar, and about rocketry in general. It essential that we are properly staffed. The expo runs 9am to 2pm each of the three days. We need to have three people there at all times, to make sure that we can properly explain things and answer questions when the place is busy, and make sure our property is protected. This is obviously not set up for convenience - it's during the week, during school hours - so we need to get our staffing well scheduled. I have now got one person scheduled through each of the three days, but we need more, to make this happen. If you can be at NASA Ames for this event, please contact me to let me know when you can help out. We are working on getting the following materials: A large folding table, (I have a small one for model displays, that will be farther back and out of finger range), Static display models of all types (Terry Swift and others have volunteered some already), a tradeshow style backdrop that we can use to hang things on, poles for hoisting the LUNAR banner, a video monitor and VCR, a 19" computer monitor, a flip chart easel. We have some display racking being built for showing off models, but if anyone has something already to use, it would be very helpful. I will try to borrow some of this stuff from my company, and will ask NASA what they might be able to supply as well. If anyone has things that can help fill this list, please let me know! My thanks in advance to those working on this already! This is a great opportunity for the local clubs to get some exposure at NASA Ames, and to help get kids involved in rocketry. I'm not sure how much time I'll be able to contribute. I work at Ames, so I'll see if I can convince them to let me volunteer on company time. I can certainly come around during lunch each day. I have some video from my X10 camera mounted on my Aerotech ARCAS that I would like to contribute to the demo video. Who's in charge of putting the video together? Rockets that I can contribute for the display: 1. Aerotech ARCAS with X10 camera along with some stills from the video 2. Aerotech Mirage with the red-white-and-blue stars-and-stripes paint job. 3. Edmonds Geminee Thunder twin boost gliders with the Blue Angels paint job. 4. One of my three-stage rockets. 5. Others?? As far as other stuff to contribute, I'll have to get back to you on that. --Greg From sax at soundingrocket.com Mon Nov 24 10:06:17 2003 From: sax at soundingrocket.com (Gregory Wong) Date: Thu Mar 25 23:00:03 2004 Subject: [BA-Rockets] AeroExpo In-Reply-To: Message-ID: Marty: The website doesn't have a lot to say about Aero Expo IV.
